#1. District Binh Thanh, Yakitori Restaurant HACHIBEI The Penthouse Review
Yakitori restaurant HACHIBEI has two stores(YAKITORI HACHIBEI and HACHIBEI The Penthouse) on Pham Viet Chanh Street in District Binh Thanh, called Little Tokyo in Ho Chi Minh City. Although the price is about 50% higher than other yakitori restaurants, it is a place where you can taste the highest quality yakitori in Ho Chi Minh City and cannot be visited without a reservation on weekend evenings.
On Saturday evening, my friend and I made a reservation at HACHIBEI The Penthouse, which is located on the rooftop of the two stores. As expected, it was a very popular restaurant, so the small store quickly filled with reservation customers shortly after 6pm.
There is a restaurant on the rooftop of a small building with an 8-story height, and there are no tall buildings around, so you can enjoy your meal while enjoying the night view of downtown Ho Chi Minh without obstruction. It's one of the most attractive restaurants in Ho Chi Minh City, and it's a place I really don't want anyone to know about.
After all, yakitori goes well with Sapporo draft beer. It's soft and refreshing and has a subtle savory taste that goes well with greasy yakitori. It's a shame that the prices are a little higher than other Japanese restaurants nearby, but you can't help but enjoy the delicious chicken skewers and Sapporo draft beer.
For my first dish, I ordered Tebasaki Shio(Salt Chicken Wing Skewers). It was a simple skewer made with fresh raw chicken wings seasoned with salt and pepper and then grilled, but it was a perfect skewer with a salty, savory flavor and a pleasant oily gravy overflowing without any unpleasant smell.
For my second dish, I ordered Momo Shio(Salt Chicken Thigh Skewers). The thick thigh was seasoned with salt and pepper, and the combination of crispy skin and tender, juicy meat was quite delicious.
For my third dish, I ordered Hatsu Shio(Salt Chicken Heart skewers). It used large, fresh chicken hearts that you can't find in other yakiniku restaurants, and the savory and chewy texture makes me want to keep drinking the beer.
For my fourth dish, I ordered Sunazuri Shio(Salt Gizzard skewers). It is an attractive skewer with little meat juices, little odor, and a light taste, chewy texture. It is definitely better to sprinkle salt and pepper rather than skein sauce.
I felt bored just drinking Sapporo draft beer, so I ordered Absolut Highball. It's a highball made by mixing Absolut vodka and carbonated water instead of whiskey, but it wasn't my taste. Absolutely, highball taste best when made with whiskey.
For my fifth dish, I ordered Torikawa Tare(Tare Sauce Chicken Skin Skewers). It was a skewer with chicken skin that was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside and slathered in tare sauce. The sweet and savory sauce was really delicious.
For my sixth dish, I ordered Torikimo Tare(Tare Sauce Chicken Liver Skewers). If done incorrectly, it can cause a fishy and disgusting smell, but it had a savory, soft and creamy flavor without any unpleasant odor, and the taste of the sweet tare sauce added to it gave it a very luxurious taste. It was the most delicious skewer I had that day.
For my seventh dish, I ordered Ebi Mayo(Mayo Shrimp Skewers). Large tiger shrimp are covered in a sweet and savory sauce made from miso and mayonnaise. It seems like a good idea to order one when you're bored just eating chicken skewers.
For my eighth dish, I ordered Tsukimi Tsukune(Chicken Ball Skewers). It is spread sweet tare sauce on meatballs made from ground chicken. Soft and juicy tsukune is quite delicious when dipped in savory and rich taste egg yolk.
For my ninth dish, I ordered Gyu Sagari(Beef Skirt Skewers). The staff kept recommending it to me, so I ordered it. That is the soft and delicious beef without any odor, along with grilled onions, tomatoes, and paprika, I couldn't help but enjoy the taste.
For my tenth and final dish, I ordered Asupara Maki(Asparagus Pork Roll Skewers). It was seasoned with salt and pepper, and the combination of the crunchy texture of the asparagus and the soft, fatty pork was quite good.
#2. HACHIBEI The Penthouse Menu
HACHIBEI is the best yakitori restaurant in Ho Chi Minh city, and its prices are definitely higher than other yakitori restaurants. However, since the ingredients used are fresh and the quality of the skewers is clearly superior to other places, you will never be dissatisfied with the price. In addition to skewers, they also sell salads, ramen, rice bowl, and various of japanese snacks.
My friend and I visited on a Saturday evening and ordered the following for dinner and drinks.
Hatsu Shio: 30,000VND x 4 EA = 120,000VND
Tebasaki Shio: 35,000VND x 2 EA = 70,000VND
Momo Shio: 30,000 x 2 EA = 60,000VND
Sunazuri Shio: 30,000VND x 2 EA = 60,000VND
Torikawa Tare: 35,000VND x 3 EA = 105,000VND
Torikimo Tare: 35,000VND x 2 EA = 70,000VND
Ebi Mayo: 50,000VND x 2 EA = 100,000VND
Hatsu Tare: 35,000VND x 2 EA = 70,000VND
Asupara Maki: 35,000VND
Tsukimi Tsukune: 50,000VND
Gyu Sagari: 50,000VND
Sapporo Draft Beer: 75,000VND x 8 EA = 600,000VND
Absolut Highball: 130,000VND x 2 EA = 260,000VND
Add 8% general VAT and 10% alcohol VAT, the total cost ofwas 1,799,200 VND, which is quite high for a meal for two. However, considering that we ate 22 high quality skewers and drank 10 glasses, you can see that it is quite cheap compared to yakiniku restaurants in Japan. HACHIBEI is the best yakitori restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City, and if you like yakitori, I definitely recommend you visit.
