#1. District Binh Thanh, Tonkatsu Restaurant KATSU Review
Tonkatsu restaurant KATSU is located in an alley behind Manor Apartment in District Binh Thanh, Ho Chi Minh City. It is a small area with many small houses where many locals live. It may not be on the same level as the famous tonkatsu restaurant Fujiro, but it is a neighborhood restaurant that surprisingly attracts many foreigners because it offers reasonably priced, authentic japanese style pork cutlet.
Until recently, it felt more like a home than a restaurant, and while the interior style is still not great, they recently installed a bar table and it now looks more like a restaurant.
I went there alone for dinner on a Tuesday evening, found a seat, and ordered a Tiger beer. I asked for Sapporo draft beer, but it was sold out, so I had no choice but to choose Tiger.
After waiting for more than 20 minutes, the Combo Pork Cutlet & Tenderloin that I ordered as a meal came out. It is a meal set consisting of a pork cutlet, a tenderloin cutlet, rice, miso soup, pickled vegetables, and sauce. You can choose the tonkatsu sauce from Sweet, Medium Spicy, Spicy, and Teriyaki.
Compared to other tonkatsu restaurants, tonkatsu is small and may not be enough for men to eat. However, considering the relatively low price of 135,000 VND for the regular pork and 170,000 VND for the Canadian pork, the quality of the tonkatsu is definitely higher than that.
The pork cutlet here has a chewy texture and a rich flavor due to the fat mixed in. It was not as greasy as it looked, and the crispy batter was good, but on this day, there was a problem with the meat separating with batter, perhaps because they were busy with a lot of orders.
The pork tenderloin here is made of a soft, lean cut with fine grains and no fat, and has a soft, mild flavor, which is different from the pork cutlet. The taste was good, but unlike usual, the batter peeled off, which was a bit disappointing.
I also ordered the Hamburg Steak which is a new single menu. It was a small plate with a hamburg steak covered in sauce and two wedge potatoes.
The hamburg steak, made with 150g of minced meat, was quite generous, had a soft texture and just the right amount of meat juice, and was quite good when eaten with a sweet and salty sauce.
#2. Tonkatsu Restaurant KATSU Menu
Tonkatsu restaurant KATSU recently remodeled its shop and also renewed its menu. The menu used to be only in Vietnamese and Japanese, but now English has been added. The prices are considerably cheaper than other tonkatsu restaurants, and although a tonkatsu size is a bit smaller, the taste and composition were better than my expected. Adding one single item to the combo menu is perfect for men.
I visited alone for dinner on a Tuesday evening and ordered as follows:
Combo Pork Cutlet & Tenderloin: 170,000VND
Hamburg Steak(150g): 115,000VND
Tiger Beer:30,000VND
Wep Wipe: 2,000VND
I was able to enjoy a lot of tonkatsu and hamburg steak for a low price of 317,000VND. KATSU is definitely not as good as the famous tonkatsu restaurants FUJIRO or Cutlet Spring in Ho Chi Minh City, but it is a neighborhood restaurant in District Binh Thanh where you can enjoy a very satisfying meal for the price. It is a good restaurant for those who live nearby to visit without feeling burdened.
