District Binh Thanh, Tonkatsu Restaurant KATSU Review(2024.06)

#1. District Binh Thanh, Tonkatsu Restaurant KATSU Review

Tonkatsu restaurant KATSU is located in an area where many locals live in an alley next to Manor Apartments in District Binh Thanh, Ho Chi Minh City. Although it is a small restaurant run by a Vietnamese local, it is a very satisfactory place for the price, with the quality comparable to that of most Japanese restaurants for the low prices.

The first floor of a shabby house in an alley is being used as a restaurant, so there are two tables for eating, and there is nothing special about the interior other than pictures of food on the wall. Fortunately, there is open kitchen, so I could see that was clean, and I was able to order food with confidence.

The only beer sold was Tiger beer. As it is a cheap restaurant, it is frequented by many locals, and Tiger, which is cheaper than expensive imported or craft beer, perhaps it is likely to sell best.

I ordered Sirloin Pork Cutlet Curry Rice Bowl. The portion size was larger than expected for the low price. It comes with cabbage salad, tsukemono, miso soup, and tonkatsu sauce. You can choose your tonkatsu sauce from sweet, medium spicy, extra spicy, or teriyaki.

Additionally, I ordered Shrimp Katsu. At 30,000VND per piece, the price may not seem that cheap, but once you taste the freshly peeled and deep-fried large tiger shrimp, you won't be able to resist ordering it.

I just added shrimp katsu to the sirloin pork cutlet curry rice bowl, and it looks much better. The salad, miso soup, and tsukemono were all okay, nothing special, and the curry was mild, but not to my taste as it had a strong acidity.

The thickness of the meat inside the crispy batter of the sirloin pork cutlet is not as thick as other famous pork cutlet restaurants, but it is the right thickness and soft without any odor, showing great quality for the price. KATSU is a restaurant that serves sirloin cutlet and shrimp katsu really well, so if you live nearby, it's a restaurant worth stopping by and eating from time to time.

#2. Tonkatsu Restaurant KATSU Menu

Tonkatsu Restaurant KATSU serves chicken cutlet, sirloin pork cutlet, shrimp katsu, udon, etc., and you can choose between rice, curry rice bowl, or curry udon to eat with cutlet. Although the menu is not diverse, the prices are quite affordable and the quality of the food is high compared to the low price.

I visited for a meal alone on a Friday evening and ordered the following.

  1. Sirloin Pork Cutlet Curry Rice Bowl: 95,000VND

  2. Shrimp Katsu: 30,000VND

  3. Tiger Beer: 25,000VND

  4. Wet Tissue: 2,000VND

I was able to taste decent Japanese food for a total of 152,000VND. KATSU is located in an alley in District Binh Thanh, where many locals live, and although it is a small restaurant run by Vietnamese locals, it is a very satisfactory place for the price with the quality comparable to that of most Japanese restaurants at low prices.
