#1. District Binh Thanh, Sticky Rice Bowl XOI BAT Review
XOI BAT, a sticky rice bowl restaurant, is located in an alley District Binh Thanh near Tan Son Nhat Airport. There are many universities, high schools, and middle schools nearby, so restaurant is quite a lot of students visiting. This is a famous restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City that was selected as a Michelin Bib Gourmand for its sticky rice bowl.
Until the middle of last year, the restaurant was quite large, but other stores opened except for the central space where the kitchen is located. This is a small restaurant with only 4 tables inside. Visited for a solo meal on a Wednesday evening and took a seat in the corner.
There is a small kitchen/counter at the entrance of the restaurant, where ordered food is prepared at the side dish showcase. They just put the sticky rice in a bowl, top it with various ingredients, and serve the food quickly. It took less than 5 minutes for the food to come out.
XOI BAT does not sell alcoholic beverages, but serves bottled water, iced tea(Tra Da), soft drinks, and lemongrass juice(Nuoc Chanh Sa). Out of curiosity, I ordered lemongrass juice and it tasted like refreshing and sweet lemon tea.
For my first dish, I ordered Xoi Thit Kho Tau - Sticky Rice with Caramelized Pork and Eggs. It comes with soup and pickled vegetables, and is a rice bowl with mashed mung beans and shallot flakes sprinkled on top of sticky rice, and topped with caramelized pork and eggs.
This is the most popular menu item at XOI BAT. It was quite delicious with savory mung beans, sweet, salty and slightly spicy pork, and shallot flakes adding flavor to the sticky sticky rice.
For my second dish, I ordered Xoi Bat - Paella Sticky Rice(Mixed Toppings). Like the other sticky rice bowls, it came with soup and pickled vegetables. This rice bowl is topped with crushed mung beans and shallot flakes sprinkled over sticky rice, and topped with chicken breast, chashu, pig ears, and an egg.
This is a rice bowl with various ingredients on top of sticky rice, allowing you to enjoy a variety of textures and flavors. It seems to be a good fit for those who want to try a combination of sticky rice and various ingredients. Personally, I liked Xoi Thit Kho Tau better than Xoi Bat.
#2. Sticky Rice Bowl XOI BAT Menu
XOI BAT is a small restaurant that sells several types of sticky rice bowls and drinks. The price is a bit high for Vietnamese sticky rice dishes, but it has the charm of being able to eat a neat rice bowl in a clean restaurant. Since this is a Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant, the price may be considered a premium.
I visited on a Wednesday evening to dine alone and ordered the following.
Sticky Rice with Caramelized Pork and Eggs: 55,000VND
Paella Sticky Rice(Mixed Toppings): 65,000VND
Nuoc Chanh Sa: 15,000VND
I ate 2 servings of glutinous rice bowls by myself for the low price of 135,000VND in total. XOI BAT is a small local restaurant that is attractive because it sells a modern reinterpretation of the sticky rice bowl that Vietnamese people often eat as a meal or snack at a reasonable price. The sticky rice bowl here has a global yet distinctly Vietnamese feel, so I can see why it received Michelin’s Bib Gourmand.
