District Binh Thanh, Okonomiyaki Restaurant Muteki Review(2024.05)

#1. District Binh Thanh, Okonomiyaki Restaurant Muteki Review

Muteki, an okonomiyaki restaurant, is located on the corner of Pham Viet Chanh Street in District Binh Thanh, called Little Tokyo in Ho Chi Minh City. That has been in business for over 10 years in the same location, and is especially loved by Japanese people living in the area.

I visited on a Friday evening to dine alone and most of the seats were already filled with Japanese customers. Compared to nearby Japanese restaurants, Muteki offers cheaper prices for Sapporo draft beer, highballs, and other alcoholic beverages, and the food tastes as good as Japanese restaurants in Japan, making it a restaurant frequented by Japanese people more than Vietnamese locals or other foreigners.

Since I came to a Japanese restaurant, I ordered Sapporo draft beer first. They served shrimp chips along with cold draft beer, which was great to eat as a beer snack while waiting for our food. Unlike other Japanese restaurants, it was really a free meal rather than an otoshi, so I felt good about it.

For my first dish, I ordered a small size Okonomiyaki 3 Kind of Cheese. It is made by generously pouring three types of cheese on top of basic okonomiyaki containing soba, pork, cabbage, bean sprouts, and egg.

The okonomiyaki was delicious with the various textures and flavors of the three cheeses. The salty and savory taste went quite well with beer. Even though I ordered a small size, the portion was large enough for a single man to eat to his full stomach.

After drinking all of the Sapporo draft beer, I ordered an additional lemon sour. It is a cocktail made by adding carbonated water and lemon juice to soju. It is said to be popular in Korea and Japan these days. It is low in alcohol and has a refreshing taste that women will like.

For my second dish, I ordered Mabo Nasu(Mapo Eggplant). A small earthen pot was filled with mapo sauce and grilled eggplant. It was a Japanese-style mapo sauce that has a mild spiciness and emphasizes sweetness and umami.

The soft and savory grilled eggplant and the spicy, sweet and salty mapo sauce mixed with a generous amount of minced pork were quite delicious. This dish has a strong seasoning flavor, so it is good to eat with rice or as a side dish with alcohol.

Muteki is a Japanese restaurant that sells not only okonomiyaki but also various teppan dishes and Japanese snacks at reasonable prices. It is a popular place for Japanese people living nearby because of its generous portions and delicious food. It's a charming place where you can enjoy a variety of Japanese food with a cold Sapporo beer, so if you live nearby, there's no reason not to visit.

#2. Okonomiyaki Restaurant Muteki Menu

Muteki, an okonomiyaki restaurant, serves okonomiyaki, various types of teppan dishes, and Japanese snacks. The prices of alcoholic beverages, such as Sapporo draft beer and highballs, are quite cheap compared to nearby restaurants, so it is a good restaurant to visit for a drink with various teppan dishes such as okonomiyaki.

I visited alone on a Friday evening and ordered the meal below.

  1. Okonomiyaki 3 Kind of Cheese: 230,000VND

  2. Mabo Nasu(Mapo Eggplant): 100,000VND

  3. Sapporo Draft Beer: 40,000VND

  4. Lemon Sour: 90,000VND

Even though it costs 460,000VND plus 8% general VAT and 10% alcohol VAT, I was able to enjoy high-quality okonomiyaki and Sapporo draft beer at a store that feels like a local Japanese restaurant for a fairly cheap price of 499,400VND.
