#1. District Binh Thanh, Local Restaurant Mango Tree Review
Mango Tree Restaurant is a local restaurant located near Pham Viet Chanh Street in Binh Thanh District, called Little Tokyo in Ho Chi Minh City, and is popular among locals. The first floor of the restaurant is the kitchen, and there is a table for dining on the second floor.
They also do business on tables on the road, which is larger than inside the building, and even on weekday evenings, most of the tables are filled with local people. On cool evenings, it's great to dine at an outdoor table.
My wife and I visited on a Saturday evening and sat down at an outdoor table. My wife ordered a Coke and I ordered a Heineken Silver. You can easily find three types of beer at local restaurants: Tiger, Saigon, and Heineken, but I heard that they didn't have the Saigon special, which is my favorite, so I ordered the Heineken.
The first dish was Muc Hap Gung(Blanched Squid) with Nuoc Mam sauce. It tasted exactly like Korean blanched squid and was really delicious without any fishy smell. It reminded me of chojang(vinegared red pepper paste), but it also goes well with nuoc mam sauce.
The second dish was Rau Cu Xao Thap Cam(Stir-fried Mixed Vegetables). It is a dish of stir-fried vegetables such as cabbage, bok choy, broccoli, and carrots, and the flavor and aroma of shallot flakes sprinkled on top were quite good. If you eat it dipped in Nuoc Tuong(Vietnamese soy sauce), it is a great food with beer.
The third dish was Ca Keo Nuong Muoi Ot (grilled loach skewers). It is salty and delicious, but the internal organs have a slightly bitter taste. You can eat that all with bones, but the bones are a bit tough, so it is a food that foreigners may not like. Vietnamese people really like this food.
The fourth and final dish was Lau Thai(Thai style hot pot). Vietnamese almost always end my meal with hot pot at local restaurants. It consists of sweet and sour Thai-style broth, vegetables, seafood, and noodles.
After putting all the vegetables and seafood in, when it starts to boil, take out the vegetables first and eat them. After some time has passed, you can take out the seafood and eat it. The sweet, sour, and spicy Thai-style broth soaks into the vegetables and seafood, making it quite delicious.
If you eat the contents of the hot pot in moderation and then add rice noodles, it will fill your stomach and be really delicious. At first, people who haven't had much experience with Southeast Asian food may be put off by the sweet and sour taste of the soup, but after eating it a few times, they will keep thinking about it.
Mango Tree Restaurant is a great restaurant where you can enjoy a variety of local Vietnamese food at a reasonable price and is definitely worth a visit if you live in Binh Thanh District.
