#1. District Binh Thanh, Local Restaurant Com Tam Tai Review
Local restaurant Com Tam Tai is located in an alley in District Binh Thanh in Ho Chi Minh City, where many locals live. It is not well known to foreigners, but it is a famous com tam restaurant among locals who have to wait in line during meal times.
They set up a makeshift roof and tables in the yard of a typical Vietnamese house and do business there. I visited alone on a Sunday afternoon and sat down at a corner table.
I ordered Tra Da(Iced tea) as a drink. It was very cheap at 2,000VND and came in a large cup filled with ice. It was just a regular iced tea that was drinkable, nothing special.
I ordered Kho Qua(Stuffed Bitter Melon Soup) to eat with com tam. The bitterness of the bitter melon may not like it, but the unique aroma and savory broth made from boiled pork bones are quite good. And the bitter melon is filled with meatballs made from oyster mushrooms and minced pork, making it even more appealing.
For lunch, I ordered Suon Cha Xuong(Pork Rib & Steamed Egg with Meat & Sausage). Suon is pork rib, Cha Trung is steamed egg with meat, and Lap Xuong is Chinese sausage. I don't order Lap Xuong at other com tam restaurants, but the sausage here is different from other places and it's delicious, so I always order it.
Add chopped chili peppers to the sweet and salty Nuoc Mam sauce for a spicy kick. Sprinkle this sauce evenly on Suon(pork rib), Cha Trung(steamed egg with meat), and rice to make com tam quite tasty.
Com Tam Tai's Suon(pork rib) was nothing special compared to other places, but Cha Trung(steamed egg with meat) had a lot of ingredients like meat and wood Ear Mushrooms, and had a chewy rather than the soft texture typical of egg custard yet full flavor, which was definitely attractive.
Com Tam Tai is an attractive restaurant that offers authentic Vietnamese com tam at a reasonable price compared to other com tam restaurants nearby, even though it is located in downtown Ho Chi Minh. I was able to have a completely satisfying meal with a generous portion and high-quality com tam at a low price.
#2. Local Restaurant Com Tam Tai Menu
Local restaurant Com Tam Tai is a restaurant famous only to locals, so it is rare to see foreigners visiting there. All the menus are in Vietnamese, and there are no English-speaking staff, so ordering can be a bit difficult. However, it is worth visiting for a decent com tam at a reasonable price in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City.
I visited alone for lunch on Sunday and ordered as follows:
Suon Cha Xuong(Pork Rib & Steamed Egg with Meat & Sausage): 70,000VND
Kho Qua(Stuffed Bitter Melon Soup): 30,000VND
Tra Da(Iced Tea): 2,000VND
Khan Lanh(Wet Wipe): 2,000VND
I was able to eat a full meal for a very cheap price of 104,000VND. Com Tam Tai is located in downtown Ho Chi Minh City, but can taste authentic Vietnamese com tam at a more reasonable price than other com tam restaurants, so it is famous among locals. I can confidently recommend here to those who are looking for a good local restaurant.
