#1. District Binh Thanh, Gringo Tacos y Cantina Review
Gringo Tacos y Cantina is a famous taco restaurant located near Pham Viet Chanh Street in Binh Thanh District, called Little Tokyo in Ho Chi Minh City. Even on weekday evenings, you can always see Westerners sitting at a few tables and eating, and the customer ratio of foreigners is higher than locals.
I visited for dinner alone around 6pm on a Tuesday evening, and there were reservation signs on a few tables. The restaurant is not large, with 4 outdoor tables and 4 indoor tables, so you must make a reservation before visiting on weekend evenings.
After ordering a few dishes, I had a house classic margarita while waiting. During happy hour from 5 to 7:30 pm, you can enjoy a 50% discount on select skull-marked drinks. A large, unique-looking glass was filled with the classic margarita. Although it has a sweet and refreshing taste, it is a much stronger cocktail than it looks due to the tequila and triple sec in it.
Chips & guacamole to go with the margarita followed. It is a food scooping up guacamole made with avocado, tomato, onion, lemon juice, salt, etc using chips made by frying tortillas. It is quite delicious as it combines the oily and savory taste of avocado with the refreshing taste. If you think the taste is boring, it's a good idea to add some spicy flavor by sprinkling a little Mexican hot sauce on the table.
I ordered three tacos, from left to right, Carnitas Taco(pork), Pollo Asado Taco(chicken), and Carne Asada Taco(beef). When ordering tacos, you can choose "spicy/not spicy". Even if you choose "spicy," it doesn't feel too strong because the spicy taste disappears after a while. Personally, I enjoyed the Pollo Asado Taco(chicken) with a generous amount of cabbage salad on top of the savory and salty chicken.
During my meal, I ordered a Mexican cocktail, Jalisco Express. It is a cocktail with a silver tequila base, lime juice, cucumber, basil, blue agave nectar syrup, and red pepper powder. It tastes like drinking cold pickle broth with a spicy, salty, basil flavor, and is not a taste that Asians are familiar with.
All were delicious except for the unique Mexican cocktail, Jalisco Express. I was very satisfied with the tacos, chips, and guacamole as they were all of high quality at an affordable price, and the house classic margarita also went well with Mexican food, making it a happy meal.
