District 7, Phu My Hung Sichuan cuisine restaurant 川小厨(Chuan Xiao Chu) Review(2024.04)

#1. District 7, Phu My Hung Sichuan cuisine restaurant 川小厨(Chuan Xiao Chu) Review

川小厨(Chuan Xiao Chu) is a Sichuan cuisine restaurant located in an alley across from Paris Baguette in Phu My Hung, District 7, Ho Chi Minh City. The name, which means a small restaurant by the stream, gives off a lot of charm.

It felt awkward and not like a restaurant as they took over a store that used to do a different type of business, put in tables and chairs, and ran it as a restaurant. But I was glad to see that this awkward feeling made it feel like a regular restaurant I had visited in a small town in China.

Cutlery was set on the table according to the number of people, and seeing that the plates, bowls, spoons, and cups were sealed in plastic, I could tell that this was a Chinese restaurant run by a real Chinese person. In China, these small dishes are not washed in restaurants, but are outsourced to outsourcing companies.

Another characteristic of Chinese restaurants is that it is difficult to find cold water, and they serve warm or hot tea by default unless specifically requested. The taste and aroma of tea served in Chinese restaurants is generally excellent.

Zhacai and stir-fried peanuts are served as basic side dishes. Everything is lightly seasoned, making it a good snack to drink while waiting for your order. Most of the dishes have strong flavors, so it can be a bit difficult to eat, but these foods go well with Kaoliang liquor.

Other tables were all drinking small bottles of Kaoliang liquor, so I ordered one out of curiosity. This is the first time I've seen 毛铺小荞酒(Mao Pu Xiao Qiao Jiu). It was an inexpensive liquor made from buckwheat and had a great taste and aroma.

The first dish was Com Chien(Fried Rice). It was a simple Chinese-style fried rice with only eggs and chives, but it was the most delicious fried rice I've had recently, with a subtle aroma of green onions and a rich flavor.

The second dish was Dau Hu Tu Xuyen(Mapo Tofu). It was a Chinese Sichuan-style mapo tofu with a strong and spicy flavor. It was really delicious, but the flavor was so strong that it was difficult to eat just this. It's a great dish to eat with fried rice or other light dishes.

Mapo tofu and fried rice go really well together. The savory and light fried rice neutralizes the strong and spicy taste of mapo tofu, creating a great synergy between the two. Even though there was a lot of food, it was so delicious that I was able to eat much more than usual.

Chuan Xiao Chu is a restaurant where you can enjoy authentic Chinese Sichuan cuisine at an affordable price. It is a great place to visit when you want to eat real Chinese food. Since the amount of food is too large to eat alone, it is recommended to visit with at least two people.

#2. 川小厨(Chuan Xiao Chu) Menu

As expected from a Sichuan cuisine restaurant, you can find many spicy and savory dishes on the menu at Chuan Xiao Chu. They serve a variety of dishes, from familiar dishes such as mapo tofu, fried rice, and Kung Pao chicken to traditional Sichuan dishes that we have never seen before. You won't have much trouble choosing a menu because the menu names are written in Chinese, Vietnamese, and English along with large photos of the dishes.

I visited on a Monday evening to dine alone and ordered the following.

  1. Dau hu Tu Xuyen(Mapo Tofu): 168,000VND

  2. Com Chien(Fried Rice): 128,000VND

  3. Ruou tieu kieu(Kaoliang Liquor): 128,000VND

  4. Table Setting: 12,000VND

  5. Wet Tissue: 5,000VND

For a very reasonable price of 441,000 VND in total, I was able to enjoy Chinese Sichuan-style mapo tofu, decent fried rice, and Kaoliang liquor. Chuan Xiao Chu was the most impactful restaurant I visited recently. I never imagined that such a great Chinese restaurant would exist in the center of Phu My Hung, District 7, where many Koreans live.
