#1. District 7, Phu My Hung Raw Fish Restaurant Anh Trai Review
Raw fish restaurant Anh Trai is located in an alley where Korean BBQ restaurant Century(Baeknyeon) is located in Phu My Hung, District 7, Ho Chi Minh City. Since food ingredients are transported from Korea once a week in containers, the overall prices are higher than in Korea, but it is an attractive restaurant where you can eat authentic Korean-style raw fish.
On weekend evenings, there are so many customers that it is difficult to get a table without a reservation. The hall on the first floor is next to the kitchen, so it is noisy with a lot of people coming and going, and the rooms on the second floor, where you have to take off your shoes to enter, is uncomfortable, so I personally prefer private rooms on the third or fourth floor.
A variety of side dishes are served, including fried eel bones, seasoned seaweed stems, tteokbokki, grilled salmon head, seaweed soup, salted squid, seaweed, and ssam. The fried eel bone mixed with the sweet and spicy seasoning was the most delicious side dish that day.
It was a special day to gather with friends after a long time, so I brought a bottle of white wine. The wine corkage fee is 300,000VND, and I could receive sufficient support for drinking wine, including opener, wine glasses, and ice bucket.
I visited the restaurant at the end of April and since it was not the season for flounder and yellowtail, I ordered 1.5kg of the most passable flatfish. 1kg of flatfish was placed on a large plate, and 500g was served separately on a side dish. I couldn't stop eating the flatfish fin because of its chewy texture and savory, oily taste.
I additionally ordered a Assorted Seafood and chose sea squirt, sea cucumber, styela clava, and live octopus. You can choose up to four types of seafood, including spoon worms, raw oysters, abalone, and raw shrimp. Perhaps because the sea cucumber and live octopus were fresh that day, they tasted much more delicious than the flatfish.
I was drinking soju with live octopus and sea cucumber when the owner served me fried tiger shrimp. Vietnamese tiger shrimp are large in size and have a chewy texture that makes them delicious when fried. If you eat it dipped in tartar sauce, you will be intoxicated.
I ordered raw fish and was given spicy fish stew as a service. This is a typical raw fish restaurant-style spicy fish stew made with flatfish bones and head, radish, green onion, red pepper, and mugwort. The staff asked if I would like to add sichuan pepper powder to the stew or give it separately, but since there was a person in my group who disliked sichuan pepper powder, I asked for it separately.
When you drink alcohol with spicy fish stew, as time goes by, the broth will boil down and become salty, so just ask the staff to add more broth. After I ate cold seafood, and finish the meal with spicy fish stew and rice, I felt like I am finishing the meal properly.
#2. Raw Fish Restaurant Anh Trai Menu
Anh Trai serves a variety of seafood such as flatfish, flounder, yellowtail, salmon, tuna sashimi, sea squirt, sea cucumber, spoon worm, abalone, anago, live octopus, raw oysters, as well as grilled fish, grilled clams, half-dried saury, and boiled octopus. Since food ingredients are transported from Korea once a week in containers, the overall prices are higher than in Korea, but it is an attractive restaurant where you can eat authentic Korean-style raw fish.
I visited with five friends on a Saturday evening and ordered the meal below.
Fresh Flatfish(500g): 1,200,000VND x 3 EA = 3,600,000VND
Assorted Seafood: 1,300,000VND
Jinro Soju: 150,000VND x 6 EA = 900,000VND
Fresh Rice Wine: 200,000VND
Tiger Beer: 40,000VND x 2 EA = 80,000VND
Wine Corkage: 300,000VND
Bowl of Rice: 20,000VND x 5 EA = 100,000VND
The total amount was quite high, 6,480,000VND. Since food ingredients are transported directly from Korea in containers, it is bound to be more expensive than Korea. Nevertheless, Anh Trai is one of the few Korean raw fish restaurants in Ho Chi Minh City where you can enjoy fresh Korean-style raw fish, and it is a place that comes to mind whenever I want to eat raw fish.
