District 1, Le Thanh Ton Sushi Omakase Sushi Hung Review(2024.06)

#1. District 1, Le Thanh Ton Sushi Omakase Sushi Hung Review

Sushi Omakase Sushi Hung is located in the building right next to Sushi Tiger in Le Thanh Ton Japanese Town, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City. This restaurant is run by Vietnamese chef Hung, It is relatively inexpensive compared to other omakase restaurants and can accommodate up to 8 people at the small bar table located on the second floor of the restaurant.

While wandering around Le Thanh Ton Japanese Town on a Friday evening, looking for a place to eat, I was lured in by a owner of the restaurant. On this day, a group of 6 people had already reserved seats at the second floor table, so I did not want to disturb their atmosphere, so I took a seat at the bar table on the first floor.

These days, most Japanese restaurants in Ho Chi Minh City have started selling Asahi beer, and it's refreshing to drink Asahi instead of only drinking Sapporo. It has a weaker taste and aroma than Sapporo, but has a stronger refreshing feeling and a cleaner finish.

Of the three omakase served at Sushi Hung, I chose Omakase B, which is in the mid-priced range. The first dish was two pieces of Sea Bream Sashimi. It was pickled and aged in vinegar, so it had a slightly sour taste and a salty seasoning, so all you had to do was top it with wasabi.

The second dish was Hotate Sashimi. Fresh scallops with a chewy and savory texture topped with wasabi and dipped in soy sauce are delicious.

The third dish was Aji Aburi. There were two pieces of aji aburi topped with yuzu syrup and chives on the ponzu sauce, so I was able to eat it right away without any sauce. It had a springy texture, a smoky aroma, and a refreshing, salty taste, making it a pretty good appetizer.

The fourth and fifth dishes were Shimesaba Aburi & Tuna Tataki. Both tasted just as we know them and there was nothing special about them. The savory miso with cucumber that came with it was a nice, clean finish to the 5 types of sashimi.

The quality of the sashimi exceeded my expectations, so I couldn't help but order some sake, so I ordered Kubota Senju Dokuri. It was an attractive sake with a moderately dry, light taste and a floral aroma. The taste of sake itself is not strong, so it goes really well with food that does not have a strong taste such as sushi or sashimi.

The sixth dish was Chawanmushi(steamed egg). It is a basic chawanmushi with no special, topped with salmon roe and sea bream meat inside, making it much more delicious than it looks.

The seventh dish was Tempura. It is a vegetable fritter made with sweet potatoes, potatoes, carrots, onions, green onions, etc. There is nothing special about it, but the freshly fried hot and crispy food is always delicious.

The eighth dish was Steamed Sea Bream. The soft, sweet fillet soaked up the soy sauce-based sauce, giving it a great umami flavor, and went well with sake, so I was very satisfied.

The ninth to twelfth dishes were sushi used Akami, Salmon, Aji, Hirame. Normally, if you take a seat at the bar table on the 2nd floor, the chef will prepare each dish for you, but since I was alone on the 1st floor, he put a few on a plate and handed it to me. It didn't have much impact, but it was decent, well-balanced sushi.

When the sushi is served, Miso Soup is also served. Because the seasoning was not too strong, the light and savory soup was good to drink while eating sushi.

I got a little drunk after drinking two bottles of sake dokuri, but the staff gave me some Cold Green Tea to sober me up. I felt a little better after drinking some cool green tea.

The thirteenth to seventeenth dishes included Engawa, Salmon Roe Gunkan, Ebi, Tekka Maki, Tamagoyaki. There were no major complaints because the sushi overall was above the entry level for the low price, but it was disappointing that there wasn't a single item that had an impact.

The dessert, Yuzu Sherbet, was served as the 18th and final dish of the meal. The refreshing sherbet made in-house was a nice finish to the meal, leaving my mouth feeling refreshed.

#2. Sushi Omakase Sushi Hung Menu

In addition to the 900,000VND and 1,200,000VND omakase courses on the menu, Sushi Hung also has an omakase course that is not on the menu. The price of the Omakase course is, which is not on the menu, between 1,500,000VND and 2,000,000VND depending on the ingredients supplied that day. You must make a reservation in advance and visit, and as the price is high, it is a higher quality course using otoro, chutoro, uni, sweet shrimp, cray fish.

I visited alone on a Friday evening and ordered the meal below.

  1. Omakase B: 1,200,000VND

  2. Asahi Beer: 65,000VND

  3. Kubota Senju Dokuri: 350,000VND

  4. Urakasumi Dokuri: 350,000VND

Including 8% general VAT and 10% alcohol VAT, the amount came to 2,137,500VND. Sushi Hung is a sushi omakase restaurant run by a Vietnamese chef Hung and is an attractive place where you can taste good sushi at a reasonable price. In particular, I felt that it was a great advantage to be able to drink good sake at a lower price than other Japanese restaurants.
