District 1, Le Thanh Ton Kaisendon & Tendon Restaurant DONG FAN Review(2024.08)

#1. District 1, Le Thanh Ton Kaisendon & Tendon Restaurant DONG FAN Review

Japanese restaurant DONG FAN is located on the second floor of the Miso Chikura Saigon building, a miso ramen restaurant, in an alley next to the Le Thanh Ton CJ Building in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City. Among the hundreds of Japanese restaurants in downtown Ho Chi Minh, there are only a few that specialize in kaisendon(raw fish rice bowls) and tendon(tempura rice bowls), but this is a place where you can taste both. This restaurant is especially attractive because it uses high-quality sea urchin roe from Hokkaido.

There is a restaurant on the second floor of the building, but it's not really noticeable because you have to pass through the ramen restaurant on the first floor to go up to the second floor. While wandering around every corner of the alley to have dinner in Le Thanh Ton Japanese Town, I happened to find a signboard with a picture of Kaisendon on it, so I went there out of curiosity.

As soon as I sat down and ordered, I were given free Tra Da (Iced Tea). They sell two types of beer Tiger and Sapporo, and since it is a Japanese restaurant, I ordered Sapporo. Although it is slightly less refreshing than Asahi beer, it has a strong savory taste and a clean finish, making it a beer that goes well with Japanese food.

For my first dish, I ordered DONG FAN's signature dish, Tokujou(Special, Sea Urchin Roe Rice Bowl). Tokujou with sea urchin roe, sea bream, anchovies, salmon roe, octopus, shiso, pickled radish, seaweed, etc. on top of rice seasoned with vinegar was served along with miso soup, abalone intestine sauce, wasabi soy sauce, wasabi, and vinegared ginger.

Creamy sea urchin roe, chewy sea bream sashimi, anchovies, salmon roe, octopus, and other ingredients were placed on rice seasoned in a sweet and sour, and a little wasabi soy sauce was added, It was really delicious without any fishy taste.

For my second dish, I ordered Kaki Tempura(Fried Oysters). Three large fried oysters came with tentsuyu(tempura sauce). It was a high-quality fried food with a thin batter and a crispy texture, while the inside was soft and savory, and you could enjoy the aroma of fresh oysters. After tasting the fried oysters, I thought that this restaurant's tendon(tempura rice bowls) would also be quite delicious.

If you order raw fish rice bowl, the staff recommends that you eat only half of the rice and make ochazuke by adding abalone intestine sauce containing a few pieces of sea bream sashimi and hot green tea to the remaining rice. With salty abalone intestine sauce and the subtle and refreshing scent of green tea, but it was better than I expected.

#2. Kaisendon & Tendon Restaurant DONG FAN Menu

DONG FAN sells several types of japanese food, including kaisendon, tendon, sashimi, and tempura. Among the hundreds of Japanese restaurants in downtown Ho Chi Minh, there are only a few that specialize in kaisendon and tendon, and it is a truly attractive restaurant that serves both. The price of tendon is around 200,000VND, but the price of kaisendon varies greatly from 165,000VND to 650,000VND depending on the ingredients.

I visited alone for dinner on a Friday evening and ordered the following.

  1. Tokujou(Special, Sea Urchin Roe Rice Bowl): 450,000VND

  2. Kaki Tempura(Fried Oyster): 120,000VND

  3. Sapporo Beer: 60,000VND

At 745,200VND including 8% VAT, the price is quite high for a meal alone, but I was able to enjoy a satisfying meal because I was able to taste high-quality sea urchin roe from Hokkaido, which is difficult to find in Vietnam. DONG FAN is one of the few restaurants in Ho Chi Minh City that sells kaisendon and tendon, making it even more attractive because it uses high-quality sea urchin roe.
