District 1, Le Thanh Ton Japanese Restaurant Yuugatei Mutsumian Review(2024.04)

#1. District 1, Le Thanh Ton Japanese Restaurant Yuugatei Mutsumian Review

Japanese restaurant Yuugatei Mutsumian is located in an alley in Le Thanh Thon Japanese Town, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City. Overall, the price of the menu is not high, but things like eel and sashimi are quite expensive. Still, it is generally a bit cheaper than other Japanese restaurants nearby, making it a popular restaurant among Japanese and locals.

There is a charcoal grill at the entrance of the restaurant for grilling yakitori or eel. It gives off such a delicious smell that it makes people passing by stop for a moment. The sight of eel grilled over charcoal is also amazing.

The first floor of Yuugatei Mutsumian has a kitchen and bar table, while the second floor has tables. I visited alone for dinner on a Saturday evening and took a seat at the first floor table.

Yuugatei Mutsumian serves fried eel bone and edamame as basic snacks. The savory and crispy fried eel bone is a great snack for drinks. It's a Japanese restaurant, but they serve basic snacks for free without the concept of otoshi, which makes me feel even better.

On this day, I wanted sake so I ordered Kikusui Funaguchi. It is one of the cheapest sakes, and as cheap as it is, the quantity is not much at 200ml. However, the subtle sweetness and soft, clean finish are much better than other typical sakes.

For my first dish, I ordered Medium Fatty Tuna. They served six thick slices of tuna, and the unique umami and oiliness of tuna tasted better than I expected. It went so well with sake that I drank it all in my first food.

For the second dish, I ordered a small size special eel, which is the signature dish here. Delicious hot soup with eel intestines and shiitake mushrooms served with pickled vegetables. The portion size is quite large so I think ordering just this much for one meal would be enough.

Savory and oily eel covered in sweet and salty tare sauce is served on top of well cooked rice. It was so soft and luxurious without any unpleasant smell that I couldn't stop eating. It also goes well with alcohol such as sake or Sapporo draft beer.

I ran out of alcohol so quickly that I ordered another bottle of sake. Nishinoseki Hana is a sake that women will like as it is not high in alcohol but has a strong sweet taste and floral scent. It wasn't bad, but personally I liked Kikusui Funaguchi more than Nishinoseki Hana.

As my third and final dish, I ordered Mixed Chicken Skewers. In order from the left, it consists of liver, chicken thighs & green onions, heart, and chicken wings. The portion was large for the price and it was delicious without any unpleasant smell. Yuugatei Mutsumian is famous for its delicious grilled eel, and the yakitori was also top-notch.

#2. Japanese Restaurant Yuugatei Mutsumian Menu

Japanese restaurant Yuugatei Mutsumian serves a variety of Japanese dishes, including sushi, sashimi, yakitori, and nabe, in addition to eel rice bowls. Overall, the price of the menu is not high, but things like eel and sashimi are quite expensive. Still, it is generally a bit cheaper than other Japanese restaurants nearby.

I visited alone for dinner on a Saturday evening and ordered the following.

  1. Medium Fatty Tuna: 380,000VND

  2. Special Eel Small Size: 275,000VND

  3. Mixed Chicken Skewers: 150,000VND

  4. Kikusui Funaguchi: 235,000VND

  5. Nishinoseki Hana: 300,000VND

The total amount was 1,340,000VND, which is quite high for a meal alone. Since the price of sakes are expensive, the overall price has gone up a lot. Nevertheless, Yuugatei Mutsumian offers a variety of Japanese dishes at reasonable prices, and unlike other Japanese restaurants nearby, it does not charge VAT, making it a great restaurant for a cost-effective meal and drink.
