District 1, Hochiminh-Style Pho Restaurant Phu Vuong Pho Review(2024.09)

#1. District 1, Hochiminh-Style Pho Restaurant Phu Vuong Pho Review

Phu Vuong Pho, a Hochiminh-style(Southern) pho restaurant, is located right across from Royal Barbershop in an alley near Ben Thanh Market in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City. This is popular not only with foreign tourists but also with locals, and is a place where you can taste authentic southern-style pho at a reasonable price.

I visited on a Tuesday evening to dine alone, and despite the heavy rain, most of the seats were filled with diners. The ratio of guests eating was half local and half foreign.

At the entrance to the restaurant, you can see various parts of beef prepared to be used as toppings for rice noodles. For a local restaurant, the inside of the kitchen is pretty neat and organized.

Once you take a seat and place your order, you will be immediately provided with herbs, bean sprouts, and wet wipes. There were only two herbs, culantro and Thai basil, and it also came with two slices of lime. Pepper slices, chopped peppers, chili sauce, hoisin sauce, pickled garlic, and black pepper to be added to the rice noodles are also on the table.

I ordered Tra Da(Iced Tea), which goes well with the rice noodles. In fact, Phu Vuong Pho is famous for its delicious avocado & durian smoothie and mango juice, but I don't think it goes well with rice noodles, so it doesn't seem a bad idea to order it as a dessert.

I ordered Gau To Dac Biet(Brisket Pho). Toppings can be chosen from TAI(Raw Loin), NAM(Lean Meat), GAU(Brisket), GAN(Tendon), VE(Flank), BAP(Shank), SACH(Tripe), VIEN(Meatball), and DUOI(Oxtail). And you can choose three sizes: Nho(Regular), Lon(Large), and Dac Biet(Special).

Usually, people choose TAI(Raw Loin), NAM(Lean Meat), and BAP(Shank), but the broth, which has a southern-style umami and a slightly sweet taste, and GAU(Brisket), which is a bit greasy due to its high fat content, are a good match for the savory and strong meaty flavor.

First, taste it without adding anything, and then add herbs, bean sprouts, sliced peppers, lime juice, etc. to suit your taste. You can enjoy a more diverse texture, aroma, and taste of rice noodles while eliminating the greasiness of brisket.

#2. Hochiminh-Style Pho Restaurant Phu Vuong Pho Menu

Phu Vuong Pho is a restaurant where you can taste authentic southern-style rice noodles at a reasonable price, even though it is located in the center of Ho Chi Minh city. The bowl is large and comes with a lot of meat toppings, but even if you order Dac Biet(Special), the amount of noodles is not as large as other restaurants, so it may not be enough to fill a man's stomach. I thought it would be better if they also sell sides like cha gio, dim sum, and meat pie.
