#1. District 1, Hanoi-style Local Restaurant Cang Tin Bia Hoi Ha Noi Review
Local restaurant Cang Tin Bia Hoi Ha Noi is a restaurant specializing in Hanoi-style dishes located near Le Van Tam Park in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City. In particular, it is famous among locals living nearby for its delicious carp hot pot and sundae. Even on weekdays, you can easily see groups of office workers visiting to have a drink after work.
My wife and I visited for dinner on a Wednesday evening and took a seat at an empty table near the entrance. There were few groups of office workers drinking beer.
Usually, locals drink Heineken or Tiger beer, but I ordered a can of Bia Hoi Ha Noi, which is hard to find in Ho Chi Minh. It means Hanoi draft beer and is a typical lager beer with a transparent golden color and a light and refreshing taste.
When I ordered food, they gave me sauces that matches the food. Nuoc mam, mam tom, sugar, chili slices, and lime were served. Usually, add the chili pepper slices to the nuoc mam and mam tom in moderation, and more add the sugar and lime juice to the mam tom.
The first dish was Dau Chien Gion(Fried Tofu). The deep-fried tofu is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, and tastes really good when dipped in nuoc mam or mam tom sauce.
The second dish was Long Heo Thap Cam(Sundae & Tripe). The plate was filled with sundae and tripe, which was very generous. The tripe was chewy and savory without any unpleasant smell, so it was really delicious. The sundae was edible, but it was a little greasy because there was too much fat.
Both fried tofu and Vietnamese sundae can be dipped in nuoc mam and mam tom sauces. In the case of mam tom, quite a lot locals also cannot eat it due to its strong taste and pungent smell, so if you do not have much experience with Vietnamese food, it is recommended to use nuoc mam sauce.
For my third dish, I ordered Lau Rieu Ca Chep(Carp Hot Pot). It came with a pot of soup with a whole carp in it, along with vegetables and Bun(rice noodles).
Once the broth starts to boil, open the lid, add all the vegetables, including the hollowed-out cabbage and dill, and cover again. Because the carp is thick and large, it needs to be boiled for quite a while.
After a while, when the thick inside of the carp is cooked through, you can take out the vegetables and carp and eat them. The slightly sour and sweet-and-spicy broth has a refreshing dill flavor, making it quite delicious. The carp had a light meat without any bad smell, but it was really hard to eat because it had a lot of small bones.
After eating some of the toppings, put an appropriate amount of Bun(rice noodles) in a bowl, pour in the broth, and eat the noodles to finish the meal. The sweet and sour broth with the taste and aroma of carp and dill went very well with the rice noodles.
#2. Cang Tin Bia Hoi Ha Noi Menu
The menu at the local restaurant Cang Tin Bia Hoi Ha Noi has no pictures and is written entirely in Vietnamese, so it may not be easy for foreigners to order. The prices are definitely affordable for a restaurant located in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City, and the portions are generous and the taste is above average, so many office workers in the area visit for a meal or a drink.
My wife and I visited on a Wednesday evening and ordered the meal below.
Long Heo Thap Cam(Sundae & Tripe): 150,000VND
Dau Chien Gion(Fried Tofu): 80,000VND
Lau Rieu Ca Chep(Carp Hot Pot): 300,000VND
