#1. District 1, French Bistro Chez Gilbert Saigon Review
French bistro Chez Gilbert Saigon is located in an area with many barbershops across from Ben Thanh Market in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City. They serve meals such as salads, soups, sandwiches, spaghetti, burgers, and snacks such as bacon, cheese, sausages, and French fries, along with a variety of drinks. This is a place especially loved by Westerners, as they can enjoy French-style sandwiches and wine, which are different from Vietnamese banh mi sandwich.
I visited alone for lunch on a Sunday and sat at a corner table inside. Chez Gilbert Saigon used to be in District Binh Thanh but recently relocated to Ben Thanh Market and has since reopened. The new place is bigger and has a more stylish interior, which makes it even better.
To go with my sandwich, I chose Carpineto Dogajolo Sangiovese, which was recommended by the staff. It is an Italian wine made from the Cabernet Sauvignon, and I liked its rich, dry flavor that surpassed my expectations.
Chez Gilbert Saigon sells meals such as pasta, burgers, and sandwiches, as well as snacks such as sausages and cheese. It is famous for its delicious French-style sandwiches. I ordered the popular menu item, the BBQ STEAK sandwich.
It was a sandwich that felt completely different from Vietnamese banh mi sandwich, with tenderloin steak, caramelized onions, pickled onions, arugula, blue cheese, BBQ sauce, and more between baguette bread made fresh in the store.
The simple yet crispy on the outside and soft on the inside handmade baguette, the tender steak, the spicy and sweet BBQ sauce, the aroma of arugula, and the sourness of pickled onions were exquisitely combined, and the blue cheese added a rich, savory flavor, making it more delicious.
Although it is a bit on the pricier side, Chez Gilbert Saigon is a charming, atmospheric bistro that serves quality French sandwiches and decent wines.
#2. French Bistro Chez Gilbert Saigon Menu
French bistro Chez Gilbert Saigon serves meals such as salads, soups, sandwiches, spaghetti, and burgers, as well as snacks such as bacon, cheese, sausage, and French fries, along with a variety of drinks. Located in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City, the prices are quite high, but it is a popular restaurant especially among Westerners because here can enjoy nice French sandwiches and good wine.
I visited alone for lunch on Sunday afternoon and ordered as follows:
BBQ STEAK: 185,000VND
Carpineto Dogajolo Sangiovese: 210,000VND x 2 EA = 420,000VND
The total was 605,000VND, which is quite expensive for a light weekend lunch. Since the price of a banh mi(Vietnamese sandwich) in Vietnam is usually around 30,000~50,000VND, it may feel even more expensive. However, Chez Gilbert Saigon offers a luxurious sandwich made with handmade baguettes and fresh ingredients, and they also serve wine in wine glasses filled to the brim with wine, so I was able to have a satisfying lunch on a Sunday afternoon.
