#1. District 1, Central Vietnamese cuisine Huong Ngu Quan Review
Huong Ngu Quan, a restaurant specializing in central Vietnamese cuisine, is located in Thach Thi Thanh alley, near the Kenh Nhieu Canal, at the northern end of Ho Chi Minh City's District 1, where the famous Com Tam Bui Sai Gon is located, so it is not very accessible. It is already a famous place for delicious food among people who live around the restaurant.
It is a small restaurant that operates with tables set up on the first floor of a home, and when you visit during meal times, there are often no seats left for customers. When I visited for dinner with my wife after 8pm on a Friday night, there were only a few customers.
Depending on the number of people, you can order 2 Phan Com(meal for 2 people) along with additional side dishes. Canh Bi Do(Pumpkin Soup), which is included with white rice in the meal, is simple but flavorful with pumpkin, chives, and minced pork.
Thit Lon Luoc(Boiled Pork) is a side dish made from pork belly boiled in water and then cut into thin slices and included in the meal. Just dip it in the accompanying sauce and eat it with vegetables.
Ca Phao Muoi Xoi(Pickled Baby Eggplant) is also a side dish included in the meal. They have a spicy, sour, and salty taste, it is like kimchi's Vietnamese version. It's great to eat with pork and omelettes.
As my first additional dish, I ordered Trung Chien Top Mo(Vietnamese Omelette). It is a dish made by adding tomatoes, onions, minced pork, and chives to eggs and frying them in a frying pan. It tastes almost the same as an omelet, but it is cooked slightly undercooked on purpose, giving it a melty yet savory taste.
As a second additional dish, I ordered Ca Thu Chien(Grilled Mackerel). A piece of mackerel was very cheap at 10,000 VND, but it was fatty and delicious without being fishy. If you dip it in the Nuoc Mam sauce that comes with it, it goes really well as a side dish for rice.
It's been a while since I was able to taste authentic central Vietnamese home cooking. Even though it is located in downtown Ho Chi Minh City, it is quite affordable, and the food is neat and plentiful, so I was very satisfied.
#2. Central Vietnamese cuisine Huong Ngu Quan Menu
Huong Ngu Quan, a restaurant specializing in central Vietnamese cuisine, writes its menu on a blackboard on the wall, and it changes slightly every day. Even if you know Vietnamese, it's written only in Vietnamese and written in cursive, so it's hard to read from a foreigner's perspective, and the staff doesn't speak English at all, so ordering is a bit difficult. However, there is no need to worry too much as it is friendly to foreigners and allows you to order by showing pictures of the food using Google Maps.
My wife and I visited on a Friday evening and ordered the meal below.
2 Phan Com(Meal for 2 people): 150,000VND
Trung Chien Top Mo(Vietnamese Omelette): 50,000VND
Ca Thu Chien(Grilled Mackerel): 10,000VND
Tra(Tea): 3,000VND x 2 EA = 6,000VND
Nuoc Khan(Wet Tissue): 2,000VND x 2 EA =4,000VND
For a total of 220,000 VND (11,900 won), I was able to eat my fill of delicious central Vietnamese home-cooked meals. Huong Ngu Quan is one of the most impressive Vietnamese restaurants I've recently visited. Aside from the location issue of being located in a corner alley in District 1 that is difficult to get to, Huong Ngu Quan is a place I can highly recommend.
