#1. District 1, Broken Rice Restaurant Com Tam Nguyen Van Cu Review
Broken rice restaurant Com Tam Nguyen Van Cu is located at the intersection of Nguyen Van Cu Street, which borders District 5, the westernmost part of District 1, Ho Chi Minh City. It is famous as the restaurant that sells Com Tam at the most expensive price in Ho Chi Minh City. The quantity is large and the taste is good, so it is frequented by not only foreign tourists but also locals.
They start grilling pork chops on the barbecue grill outside the restaurant as soon as the shop opens and don't stop until the ingredients run out. The smell of seasoned pork chops wafts through the intersection around the restaurant along with cloudy smoke.
When you enter the shop, you can see right into the kitchen, where all the ingredients for com tam, including pork skin, fried eggs, sausages, and meatballs, are neatly divided up. I could see the staff working tirelessly preparing to serve the hall and packaging for delivery.
I visited alone to eat at 11am on a Sunday, but there were no empty seats, so I waited about 10 minutes for a table to become available. Delivery drivers were also waiting in line to take away food, making the entrance to the store crowded with people.
Com Tam Nguyen Van Cu sells a variety of drinks including coconut, orange juice, lemonade, milk, coffee, soda, oolong tea and beer. The coconuts sold here are famous for being fresh and delicious, and they were actually quite good, with a good aroma and high sugar content.
Canh Kho Qua Don Thit(Stuffed Bitter Melon Soup), which I ordered to eat with Com Tam, came out first. The bitter taste of bitter melon may be repulsive, but it has a unique flavor, a savory broth made from pork bones, and minced pork meatballs, making it quite edible.
I was able to receive Com Tam Suon(Broken Rice with Pork Chops) more than 15 minutes after ordering. And I added Trung(Fried Egg) and Xiu Mai(Meatball). As the price was high, the pork chops were definitely thicker and larger compared to other Com Tam restaurants.
It is a good idea to ask the staff for scissors to cut the pork chops into bite-size pieces and then enjoy your meal comfortably. Compared to its thickness, it was soft and not tough, had no unpleasant odor, and was well seasoned with sweet and salty, so it was quite delicious.
Pork chops, fried eggs, and meatball sprinkled with Nuoc Mam sauce are really delicious when eaten with rice. Although I didn't order it that day, I also recommend to order Cha Trung(Meat Steamed Egg) and Bi(Pork Skin), which are good to eat together.
#2. Com Tam Nguyen Van Cu Menu
Com Tam Nguyen Van Cu, a Com Tam restaurant, is the most expensive place to sell Com Tam in Ho Chi Minh City, with prices three times higher than other local restaurants. Of course, the pork chops are thick and large, but I can't shake the feeling that they are too expensive. However, it is definitely more delicious than other Com Tam restaurants, so it is crowded with not only foreigners but also locals at meal times.
I visited alone during lunch time on a Sunday and ordered the meal below.
Com Tam Suon(Broken Rice with Pork Chop): 170,000VND
Trung(Fried Egg): 10,000VND
Xiu Mai(Meatball): 10,000VND
Canh Kho Qua Don Thit(Stuffed Bitter Melon Soup): 40,000VND
Dua(Fresh Coconut): 35,000VND
Khan Lanh(Wet Wipe): 3,000VND
The total amount was 268,000VND, which is quite high for a local restaurant. Com Tam Nguyen Van Cu's Com Suon definitely had better quality compared to other Com Tam restaurants, with the pork chops being larger, thicker, softer and well-seasoned, but I'm not sure if it's worth it since it's three times the price. Anyway, it is definitely one of the best Com Tam restaurants in Ho Chi Minh.
