#1. District 1, Broken Rice Restaurant Com Tam Di Ut Review
Broken rice restaurant Com Tam Di Ut is located in an alley opposite the fire station and police headquarters in the southwestern tip of Ho Chi Minh City's District 1. This is a restaurant where you can taste classic Vietnamese com tam at an affordable price. Although it is not yet well-known to foreigners, it is popular with locals.
I visited after 2pm, a little late for lunch on a Sunday, and the restaurant was deserted. But delivery orders continued to come in, as Grab and Shopee drivers continued to take out food.
Com Tam Di Ut does not have beer, but sells a few beverages including soft drinks, iced tea, and soy milk. I ordered a cup of Tra Da(Iced Tea), which was easy to drink. Perhaps because there were no other customers, I didn't even ask for it, but they refilled my iced tea for free.
When I ordered food, they gave me Nuoc Mam(Fish Sauce). I added a little bit of chopped pepper to give it a spicy taste. The sweet, salty, and umami nuoc mam sauce adds flavor to the com tam, and the spicy taste definitely cuts through the greasiness, making meal even more delicious.
I ordered COM DUI GA NUONG MAT ONG(Honey Seasoned Grilled Chicken Leg) after receiving a strong recommendation from the staff. Here I added BI NAC(Pork Skin), CHA NUONG(Steamed Meat and Egg), and TRUNG OP LA(Fried Egg).
I added CANH RONG BIEN(Seaweed Soup) to eat with Com Tam. This soup contains cilantro, minced pork, and seaweed. It has a slightly sweet taste along with the scent of cilantro, so your taste may differ, but it is almost similar to Korean seaweed soup, so it is easy to eat.
Usually, when people think of com tam, they think of COM SUON(Pork Rib), but this restaurant's COM DUI GA NUONG MAT ONG(Honey Seasoned Grilled Chicken Leg) was also quite attractive, so I felt it was worth ordering. The steamed meat and egg and pork skin that I ordered as additional toppings were good, but the tender grilled chicken legs with a sweet honey seasoning were especially delicious.
I wasn't satisfied with just one dish, so I ordered COM SUON(Pork Rib) with PATE AP CHAO(Pate Ham) as a topping. I liked the combination of the soft texture of fatty pate ham made from ground meat and the sweet and salty pork rib.
#2. Broken Rice Restaurant Com Tam Di Ut Menu
Com Tam Di Ut is a fairly clean local restaurant located in downtown Ho Chi Minh City. There is well known to locals for its affordable prices and delicious food. You can choose a com tam, such as pork ribs, pork belly, or chicken legs, and then add toppings such as pork skin, steamed meat and egg, or fried egg to order. As it is cheap, the portion may not be enough for a man to eat.
I visited alone for lunch on a Sunday late afternoon and ordered the following.
COM DUI GA NUONG MAT ONG: 50,000VND
BI NAC: 8,000VND
CHA NUONG: 8,000VND
TRUNG OP LA: 8,000VND
COM SUON: 43,000VND
PATE AP CHAO: 28,000VND
CANH RONG BIEN: 12,000VND
TRA DA: 3,000VND
Wet Wipe: 2,000VND
For a total of 162,000 VND, I was able to have a full meal with two com tam plus toppings. Com Tam Di Ut personally feels like the portion size is a little small, but the price is cheap and the taste is good, so it is definitely a restaurant worth visiting if you want to taste authentic com tam.
