#1. District 1, Banh Canh Cua Restaurant Nha Hang Kim's Review
Banh Canh Cua Restaurant Nha Hang Kim's is located near Ben Thanh Market in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City. It was once the most famous banh canh cua(crab meat noodles) in Ho Chi Minh City, but it is true that it does not feel as good as it used to be. The price is quite high compared to other banh canh cua restaurants, but the portions are generous, there is also a lot of crab meat, and the taste is still good, so if you want to taste real banh canh cua, it is worth a visit.
I visited alone for dinner on a Wednesday evening and was seated at an empty table in the corner. It was a small, cozy restaurant, and the atmosphere was bright and clean, which gave me a good first impression.
They sell beer such as Saigon, 333, Heineken, and Sapporo, as well as Korean soju and vodka Nem. I ordered my favorite Vietnamese beer, Saigon Special. As expected from a restaurant frequented by foreign tourists, they served cold canned beer.
There are cutlery holders and tissues on the table. When I ordered Banh Canh Cua(Crab Meat Noodles) and Cha Gio Cua(Crab Meat Spring Roll), they gave me chopped chili peppers and lime to put in the crab noodles, and a dipping sauce for toppings. I could use the empty bowl to eat the crab meat spring roll.
I ordered Nha Hang Kim's signature dish, Banh Canh Cua(Crab Meat Noodles). Banh Canh is a Vietnamese noodle dish made with thick noodles mixed with tapioca flour and rice flour. The soup contains various seafood and pork, and as the name Cua(Crab) suggests, it also contains crab meat.
It was very filling, with a variety of ingredients including crab meat, shrimp, quail eggs, pork, and pine mushrooms. The broth was made from pork bones, and various seafood was added to create a rich broth, with the flavor and savory taste of crustaceans.
I was able to enjoy the crab meat noodles more deliciously by adding lime for acidity and chopped chili pepper for spiciness. Travelers would probably like to add a generous amount of chopped chili pepper to remove the unique smell and make the soup more spicy.
Following Banh Canh Cua, Cha Gio Cua(Crab Meat Spring Roll) came out. Bun(rice noodles), lettuce, perilla leaves, Thai basil, and nuoc mam sauce were served together. This was similar to Bun Cha.
The crab meat spring roll was quite large, filled with crab meat, glass noodle, and wood ear mushrooms. It was quite tasty when eaten in an empty bowl with rice noodles, vegetables, and nuoc mam sauce. However, it is difficult to say that it is worth the 95,000VND.
Nha Hang Kim's is a restaurant with pretty good food, but it is popular with tourists, so the prices have gone up a lot compared to a few years ago, so it is no longer offer affordable meals. The crab meat fried rice and crab meat noodles are still delicious and the portions are generous, so it is worth ordering, but it is better not to order some dishes, such as crab meat spring roll.
#2. Nha Hang Kim's Menu
Nha Hang Kim's is a restaurant famous for its delicious Banh Canh Cua(Crab Meat Noodles), but it is so popular with tourists that the prices have gone up significantly compared to a few years ago, so it is no longer offer affordable meals. Overall, the prices are higher than those of local restaurants in the area, but there are still people who come here because of the delicious crab meat noodles and crab meat fried rice.
I visited for dinner alone on a Wednesday evening and ordered as follows:
Cha Gio Cua(Crab Meat Spring Roll): 95,000VND
Banh Canh Cua(Crab Meat Noodles): 255,000VND
Saigon Special: 55,000VND
The total amount was 434,767.5VND, including an unknown 5% discount, 5% service charge, and 8% VAT. The food prices were already quite high, and the calculation method was complicated, which was a bit disappointing. However, the crab meat noodles at Nha Hang Kim's were still delicious.
